Circumstances

SSGT Robert G. Wold 36711213, born September 8, 1920 was from Cook County, Illinois and enlisted on November 18, 1942. Not much is known about him before he joined the 46th Infantry Battalion of the 5th Armored Division. He was a Staff Sergeant.

On April 12, 1945, Company B, 46th Armored Infantry Battalion, departed from a road junction at approximately 19:45 hours with the mission of seizing the railway bridge across the Elbe river north of Tangermünde, Germany.

The company advanced dismounted and while crossing an open field, heavy small arms, mortar and Pantzerfaust fire was encountered. According to the casualty clearance plan the enemy consisted of approximately 2000 Wehrmacht troops plus 200 SS soldiers.

According to several statements Staff Sergeant Wold was hit directly in the head by a German Pantzerfaust. SSGT Wold had wound of serious nature and did not move after falling to the ground. It was assumed that SSGT Wold died instantly. This also occurred on April 12, 1945. SSGT was 25 years of age.

At that time a search for SSGT Wold could not be conducted as the company was assigned a new mission to the north.
