Possible World War II field grave in Wageningen, The Netherlands
Possible German field grave
Eyewitness stories indicate that a possible World War II field grave lies in a garden in Wageningen, The Netherlands. The current landowner wants to maintain his property but fears finding human remains and by doing that, damaging the field grave. It is believed to be a German field grave containing one or more bodies.
Study Group Missing Soldier would like to investigate the area. The location of the suspected field grave has been pinpointed quite accurately.
Report
In 2021, amidst the COVID-19 chaos, Peter Mulder and Tino Dam travel to Wageningen. Rumors suggested there were several human remains, and a possible field grave should be easy to find. However, the yard is quite extensive and overgrown with weeds. Part of the barn had also been demolished, and there are a lot of debris in the ground. This hampers the search.
The weeds aren’t really a problem and quickly removed using a bush-cutter and a machete. The debris, a completely overgrown vegetable garden, and scraps of metal are a problem, as is the metal fence surrounding the property. Nevertheless, the search is thorough, and we are able to rule out the presence of any field graves.
There was certainly nothing on the current owner’s property, but it’s quite possible that there were field graves on the adjacent property. Since 1945, the property boundaries have shifted quite a bit.
Few war-related items were found on the property, which is quite unusual. The yard is not far from Grebbenberg, and we expected to find more war material.
Total search time: 9.5 hours
