Searching for Virgil B. Carson

Missing in Action - PFC Carson, Virgil B. - 37357817

June 13, 2025

Today, Friday June 13, 2015 has been chosen as the day to search for the missing PFC Virgil B. Carson (37357817). The project has been pending since 2010 and has been hampered by factors like COVID-19.

We’ve already visited the location several times and spoken to eyewitnesses, but today we have permission to search a plot of land in Mook. It involves a garden and a meadow, and the landowner has given us permission to search both for a possible field grave.

Hot

In the morning, we have an appointment with the mayor and the local police. The police will escort us and be present in the field as long as possible. The EOD is aware of our activities and will come and collect any explosives upon notification.

It’s an oppressively hot day. The temperature is above 30 degrees Celsius, and water is essential. Fortunately, we’ve brought enough provisions with us, although the landowner also offers us plenty.
The mayor himself also comes to observe our activities, which is a pleasant surprise.

Findings

We have multiple readings during the metal detecting, and we recover a considerable amount of metal. Among them are some bullet casings and grenade detonators, so we report them to the Emergency Services (EOD). We collect the recovered explosives in a “explosion pit” in the corner of the field.
Peter, Tino, and Bart search the yard for about 10 hours in total, but unfortunately, they can’t find the remains of Virgil B. Carson. This is unfortunate, but it also excludes an area, and that’s part of the investigation. We’re not giving up, and perhaps we’ll have better luck next time.
