Circumstances
Private Frederick W. Goempel Jr. was replacement soldier who recently joined Compagnie F and was fairly unknown for the others in his platoon. According to the 293 file, PVT Goempel was last seen at the point of departure while embarking a boat with which his platoon would cross the Sauer river from Luxembourg to Germany.
When the objective was reached and a bridgehead established it occurred that PVT Goempel was absent. At that time, searching for PVT Goempel was impossible due to firing of enemy heavy artillery and small arms.
